Nirvana - Nevermind - Released Sept 24, 1991
This is their second release.
The story goes, Kurt Cobain came up with the cover concept while watching a documentary on natural water child births. He went to the Geffen with the idea and they searched around and found some stock images, but they all agreed that most of them were too graphic for a record jacket. If you've never seen a natural childbirth....It is NOT for the faint of heart. One image that they really liked and was similar to the final jacket was decided on, but the agency wanted $7500 for the use, which was too much for their budget.
Geffen's Art Director, Robert Fisher, sent out Photographer Kurt Weddle to a pool to scout out some talent. According to Kurt, He called his friend Rick Elden and asked if he wanted to make some money for throwing their kid in the pool. Rick and his wife, agreed and they threw the kid in the pool and took about 15 shots and called it a day. All parties have said at different times that they were paid $200 for the photoshoot and Kurt took them out for tacos for dinner after.
Geffen was immediately concerned about the baby's penis and wanted to cover it with a hype sticker. Kurt is on record as saying, the only sticker he would allow was one that said, "If you're offended by this, you must be a closet pedophile." Geffen backed down and the record went out as is. There was some backlash. but Kurt doubled down on his statement and Geffen held firm.
In August of 2021, "The Baby" filed the first of several frivolous lawsuits claiming everything from not being paid to child pornography, no consent, etc. (I refuse to use his real name as I don't want his name associated with my page, nor do I want to have his name on the internet one more time. I'm also afraid that if I say his name 3 times he might appear in my house like candyman, and that keeps me awake at night,)
Finally, in 2022 a judge denied his claims and blocked any further lawsuits. I'm sure we'll hear from "The Baby" again in the future. Let me remind you, that "The Baby", has a full color tattoo of the album, has done any and every time of money and cash grab opportunity he can in association with this album release. Every anniversary and pseudo-anniversary he can create he pops out of his apartment like a sad gopher looking for his paycheck.
There were other titles considered including Sheep and Sacagawea, but Kurt ended with Nevermind because it was a metaphor for his attitude on life and because it was grammatically incorrect.
