Matchbox 20 -  Yourself or Someone Like You - Released on October 1, 1996

This is their Debut album.

The album was supposed to be called The Woodshed Diaries but Thomas and Doucette saw a woman's musical performance at Cafe Largo in Los Angeles and she introduced a song saying, "it's for you. or someone like you".  They loved it and wanted to use it.  So much so that they changed it even after they had already sent out 3,500 promotion copies of the CD titled as Woodshed Diaries.

The album sold a whooping 610 copies the first week!  It eventually went on the become diamond status, selling 10 million units.

One of the big talking points during interviews was the cover photo. Rob Thomas would often make outlandish stories about who the man was just to entertain himself and band mates.  They often said he was a homeless man named Ray Parker JR who was working for craft services on the set of one of their videos. In case you didn't know, Ray Parker JR, is a singer most known for the Ghostbusters theme song. (who you gonna call?)

A lawsuit was filed in 2005 by Frank Torres, who is the actual man on the cover.

There seems to be some speculation as to where the photo was actually taken.Torres Claimed the band never asked his permission to use his likeness. In the Litigation, Torres claimed the photo was taken as he walked down the street after being asked to pose. The band and the photographer claim he was a background artist and was in the background of one of the photos of the band photo shoot and they liked his look so they cropped it out and used it for the cover.

The lawsuit was dismissed and sadly, Torres died in 2016 at the age of 73.

Before Matchbox 20, several of the members were in the band, "Tabitha's Secret" and the other members also tried to sue Matchbox 20 claiming some of the songs were theirs and they hadn't been paid royalties.  This lawsuit was also dismissed without Matchbox 20 paying anything.
