Green Day -   Dookie -     Released Feb 1, 1994

This is their third album.

The name of the Album was supposed to be 'Liquid Dookie" and it was a reference to all the members of Green Day being sick from eating spoiled food while on tour.  They all agreed that "Liquid Dookie" was probably a little too gross for an album title and they shortened it to Dookie.

Richie Bucher is the artist for the "Where's Waldo" style jacket design. The setting is Telegraph Blvd in Berkeley, CA where Green Day is from.  It's a cornucopia of Berkeley who's who inner circle references as well as some pop culture references, including Elvis Presley and even the woman from the cover of Black Sabbath's self-titled LP.

The first release on CD had Ernie from The Sesame Street crowd surfing on the back of the CD. He was removed on all subsequent pressings because they were afraid they would get sued.  Billy Joe Armstrong also tells a tale that a grandmother bought the CD thinking it was a children's record, so that was another reason they removed Ernie.

I can kind of see that argument because of the cartoony front artwork, but look closer and you'll see monkey's throwing feces and bombs that say dookie on them.

Walmart and K-mart refused to stock the CD because of...well, everything.  The bombs, mushroom clouds, monkeys, etc.  At this point, I'm starting to think they were getting free publicity for refusing to sell anything.  AS P.T. Barnum once said, "There's no such thing as bad press."

Dookie sold a massive 9,000 copies it's first week on the market but would later go on to win a Grammy in 1995 for Best Alternative Album.
